If you’re in need of a good basket-weaving tutorial, Brett Bara provides one over on Design*Sponge. To make her basket, Brett folded and sewed brown packing-paper strips (from shipments of online purchases) into thick pieces, then skillfully wove them together.
Other types of paper, or rolls of 35mm film (like this basket), among other materials — which may or may not involve sewing — could be used.
The part of this I can’t get over is the $30/skein Madeleine Tosh wool that’s IN the basket.

Bluh.
Trying to teach myself how to crochet again so I can make a wedding blanket for some friends. It’s not going well.

This is so awesome, I can barely stand it. I need a TARDIS for my garden, STAT!

A hint of crafts to come! Cryptic picture is cryptic. :)

Cosplaying Kid of the Day: Proving that being the best dad ever wasn’t a one time deal, photographer Jim D. Griffioen — who you may remember from dressing his son up in a homemade RoboCop costume last year — returns with a 20th anniversary homage to one of his son’s favorite movies: The Rocketeer.
Over on his blog, Griffioen describes how he pieced the costume together for pennies using a bike helmet, a cheap Iron Man mask, a couple of thrift-store jackets, a couple of Pepsi bottles, a few found items, a lots of elbow grease.
[sweetjuniper.]
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I loved The Rocketeer when I was little. This is awesome.

From old pillowcase to sewing machine cover in 35 minutes. I may tuck the corners in so it doesn’t look like gingham Yoda, but for now it’ll do.

The table as situated in the yard. We’re planning a mix of short benches and old chairs, painted red.
The second photo is a detail of the finish. We got a semi-transparent deck stain in Chesapeake blue, painted it on and left it for a few minutes, and then wiped the excess. This produced a weathered, beachy effect. I like this particular part because the grain shows through so beautifully. :) A coat of Thompson’s Water Seal, and it’s done!
Also: please ignore the ghetto fence in the background. =))

We built a table in a little less than 24 hours. We still need to make benches, but the lion’s share of the work is complete. Now we have to sand it and stain it and we will be done!! :)
